Ses domaines de recherches incluent la découverte des pluies acide, la détermination de l’age et de la longévité de certains poissons du Pacifique, l’indentification des nouvelles espèces de lamproies, et les relations évolutionnaires entre ces espèces, de même que les effets des changements climatiques sur les populations des poissons. Il fut l’un des premiers scientifiques à écrire à propos des régimes du climat et les changements de régimes climatiques.
