Hai D.T. Nguyen, Ph.D.

Current research and/or projects

My main research program is focused on taxonomic, molecular phylogenetic and genomic studies of zoosporic fungi with an emphasis on those that are agriculturally important. At the moment, I work on: the fungus causing potato wart, Synchytrium endobioticum, and its relatives in Chytridiomycota; Pythium species and related genera in the Oomycota.

Research and/or project statements

  • Development of novel molecular detection tools and bioinformatic tools
  • Whole genome sequencing and characterization of agriculturally important fungi
  • Resolving issues in fungal taxonomy
  • Fungal species identification, diagnostics, and description of novel species

Education and awards

  • Ph.D. Biology, University of Ottawa, 2015
  • M.Sc. Microbiology and Immunology, University of Ottawa, 2011
  • B.Sc. Biology (Cell and Molecular Biology), University of Ottawa, 2008
