Research on the parasites of fish

Dr. Jones est le principal chercheur du programme de parasitologie des poissons à la Station biologique du Pacifique du MPO. Dans ce domaine, les travaux de recherche portent sur trois grands volets : la biodiversité, les études de cycle de vie et les interactions entre l'hôte et le parasite. Le programme s'intéresse également au degré de transmission des parasites entre les espèces sauvages et les populations d'élevage et à ses répercussions.

Dans le domaine de la biodiversité des parasites, on cherche également à identifier les nouveaux taxons et à mieux connaître la répartition et l'abondance des parasites qui présentent actuellement des risques pour la santé du saumon exploité commercialement. Parmi les parasites récemment découverts ou identifiés en Colombie-Britannique, citons notamment Parvicapsula kabatai etSphaerospora elwhaiensis, qui s'attaquent au rein du saumon, de même que Facilispora margolisi et Desmozoon lepeophtheri, parasites du pou du poisson, lui-même parasite du saumon. Outre la microscopie photonique et électronique et la biologie moléculaire, la recherche peut maintenant compter sur de nouvelles stratégies de diagnostic des parasites. Par exemple, on récolte à cette fin des anticorps sur les œufs de poulets immunisés pour reconnaître les espèces de Loma, important parasite des branchies du poisson.
Les études de cycle de vie font appel à des analyses de laboratoire contrôlées pour cerner les facteurs essentiels de la transmission des parasites et de sa régulation. Des modèles de la transmission du pou du poisson récemment établis en laboratoire, ont rendu compte d'importantes différences de vulnérabilité entre les espèces de saumon du Pacifique. Ce projet a également été le premier à démontrer, après les études sur le terrain, que l'épinoche si abondante à l'échelle locale est très vulnérable à ce parasite.

Les travaux portant sur l'interaction entre l'hôte et le parasite font appel à des outils relevant de l'immunologie et de la biologie moléculaire pour évaluer l'incidence des infections de parasites sur le saumon. On sait maintenant que les variations de vulnérabilité au pou du poisson des espèces de saumon se rattachent aux différences de la filière biochimique cutanée et rénale.
