Lianne Postma s'est jointe au ministère des Pêches et des Océans lorsqu'elle était étudiante dans le cadre d'un emploi d'été, en 1987, afin de travailler sur la génétique du grand corégone. Elle est membre du laboratoire de génétique des populations de mammifères marins de la Division de la recherche arctique depuis 1990 et est également membre de la Society for Marine Mammalogy.

Mme Postma travaille et étudie dans le domaine de la génétique des populations depuis 1987. Elle a commencé sa carrière en s'intéressant aux poissons (grand corégone, omble chevalier), mais s'est rapidement tournée vers les mammifères marins. Ses recherches ont porté sur l'emploi des variations isoenzymatiques et des techniques immunochimiques pour étudier la différentiation des stocks et les trajectoires évolutives des cétacés (principalement le béluga et le narval) de même que sur l'élaboration de méthodes d'analyse de l'ADN par réaction en chaîne de la polymérase pour l'étude des populations de mammifères marins arctiques. Ses recherches actuelles portent sur la différentiation des stocks, l'incidence des prélèvements sur les mammifères marins arctiques et l'identification individuelle des animaux pour des études de marquage génétique et des études des liens de parenté entre les individus.
