Un microbiome est une communauté de microorganismes vivant dans un milieu particulier. Ces communautés peuvent être complexes et comprendre de nombreux types de microorganismes, notamment des bactéries, des archées, des champignons, des protozoaires et des virus. La communauté microbienne que l’on trouve dans l’intestin est très diversifiée et joue un rôle essentiel dans la digestion et la santé. Les ruminants (vaches, chèvres, moutons, cerfs, etc.) ont un compartiment spécialisé dans leur tractus gastro-intestinal appelé rumen, qui sert dans la digestion du matériel végétal qu’ils ingèrent. Le microbiome du rumen est responsable de la digestion efficace des glucides végétaux et de la transformation de ces sucres en acides gras volatils, qui servent de source d’énergie à l’animal. Les microorganismes du rumen sont également la principale source de protéines utilisées par les ruminants pour leur croissance. Mes recherches portent sur l’application de techniques génomiques de pointe, de la microbiologie classique et de la biochimie des protéines pour comprendre comment les microorganismes présents dans le tractus gastro-intestinal du bétail influencent la santé et la productivité de l’animal. Essentiellement, le but est d’améliorer la santé et la productivité du bétail.
