John Cassidy occupe un poste de chercheur scientifique principal au sein de Ressources naturelles Canada. Ses travaux de recherche portent sur tous les aspects des études sur les séismes dans le but d’atténuer les répercussions des séismes qui pourraient survenir au Canada. Ses activités de recherche actuelles comprennent : la cartographie des mouvements le long de failles; la cartographie de champs de contrainte provoquant des séismes; la détermination plus exacte de l’emplacement des séismes; l’étude des facteurs qui contrôlent les variations locales des secousses sismiques; la cartographie de la structure terrestre en utilisant les ondes sismiques (y compris des applications à l’évaluation des ressources). Ces résultats de recherche servent à documenter les normes et les codes nationaux (par ex., le Code national du bâtiment du Canada, les codes régissant les ponts, les codes de construction des barrages) et permettent d’élaborer des scénarios exacts des séismes au Canada. John est professeur adjoint à l’Université de Victoria où il enseigne et encadre des étudiants de deuxième et troisième cycles en recherche sur les séismes.
Activités professionnelles / intérêts
John a fait partie de l’équipe de reconnaissance de l’Association canadienne du génie parasismique qui s’est rendue au Chili à la suite du séisme dévastateur de magnitude 8,8 survenu en 2010. Il a traversé les régions les plus durement touchées du Chili pour examiner les ponts, les hôpitaux et les écoles, et comparer les dommages en fonction des niveaux d’intensité observés des secousses sismiques. Il continue de collaborer avec des scientifiques et des ingénieurs au Chili, afin de renforcer les partenariats en recherche et de mieux comprendre les risques liés aux séismes de subduction au Chili, au Canada et ailleurs.
John siège à de nombreux comités directeurs et comités de rédaction locaux, nationaux et internationaux, et agit régulièrement à titre de réviseur de propositions de recherche et d’articles de revues scientifiques.
