Biodiversity and Bioresources
The Plant Gene Resources Potato Collection collects, maintains and generates potato germplasm and their wild relatives. Scientists develop DNA fingerprinting and genotyping technologies to manage potato genetic resources and select core accessions for conservation, research and utilization.
- Improved germplasm through innovative “Accelerated Release” enables industry to evaluate and bring new varieties rapidly to market. Nine newly licensed varieties were listed under Active Seed Multiplication and Commercial Sale in seven provinces in 2013 provincial seed directories, including two varieties (Vigor and Tarnick) adopted by a major manufacturer of potato chips and other snack foods in the Midwestern United States and Canada, and two new fresh market potato varieties, AAC Confederation and AAC Canada Gold-Dorée, named in celebration of Canada 150.
