Plain language summary

Blueberries, cranberries and lingonberries are agriculturally important fruit that are used fresh (blueberries) or processed as juice (cranberries) or as preserves (lingonberries). During the periods of growth, flowering and fruit production, each of these berry crops is attacked by a complex of disease and insect pests. To help berry growers, crop consultants and researchers identify and manage these diseases and insects, the 231-page, full colour Compendium of Blueberry, Cranberry, and Lingonberry Diseases and Pests, Second Edition, was published in 2017 by the American Phytopathological Society Press. Dr. Fitzpatrick was invited to contribute illustrated chapters on four insect pests: winter moth, black vine weevil, blackheaded fireworm of cranberry, and cranberry girdler. Fitzpatrick’s chapters describe the insect pest at all life stages, explain life cycle and damaging behavior, and outline biological, cultural, physical and insecticidal approaches to management. High quality photographs (copyright Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada, as represented by the minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada) illustrate each chapter.
