The goal of the work was to evaluate the incidence and severity of the stripe rust on winter and spring wheat in Southern Alberta in the geographical area delimited by the USA border and Highway 1 and in between Medicine Hat and Cardston/FortMcleod. Surveys were conducted during the fall on winter wheat and from April to July on both winter and spring wheat. Stripe rust was detected in 30% of the surveyed fields during the fall on winter wheat and was present in 20% of the surveyed field in early April showing a successful overwintering of the rust spores. This represented a potential high inoculum of rust to infect susceptible wheat. Given the dry weather conditions that prevailed during the spring until mid-July, incidence and severity of stripe rust remained low and stripe rust did not have an economical impact on susceptible wheat.

Abstract

Stripe rust incidence and severity was assessed in winter and spring wheat fields in Southern Alberta during the 2014-15 crop season. Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici was observed in early December 2014 and in late April 2015 suggesting that overwintering is Southern Alberta had occurred. Stripe rust remained localized throughout May and June but in early July, stripe rust had become widespread but severity levels remained relatively low. Dry prevailing condition during the spring and early summer were likely responsible for the limited impact of stripe on wheat yields and quality in Southern Alberta during 2015.
