Current research and/or projects

Dr. Diarra’s research program closely aligns with two of AAFC's National research priorities: (1) Addressing threats to the agricultural and agri-food value chain; (2) Improving environmental performance of the Canadian Agricultural System. Dr. Diarra’s research on the molecular ecology of antimicrobial resistant and foodborne bacteria associated with livestock and poultry adds a unique dimension to AAFC’s overall research capability. Overall, his research evaluates the risk to human health associated with livestock and poultry production practices in Canada, and seeks to develop strategies to mitigate the contamination of food and the environment.

Research and/or project statements

  • Insects as sustainable feed ingredient for broiler
  • Fruit by-products to modulate gut microbiota in broiler chicken
  • Optimization of berry by-products use in organic poultry production chicken
  • GRDI-AMR Mitigation: ecology and alternatives to antibiotics in Poultry
  • On-farm evaluation of encapsulated essential oil
  • Butyrate with plant extracts to reduce the use of antibiotics in chicken production
  • Metabolic and Functional activities of bio-protective lactic cultures
  • Mitigation of antimicrobial resistance in poultry

Professional activities / interests

  • Molecular ecology of bacteria and antibiotic resistance in food production: Risk assessment, characterization of survival mechanisms and gut microbiota
