Mikio Moriyasu

Head, Snow Crab Section

Current research and/or projects

Mikio is a research scientist and head of Snow Crab Section at Gulf Fisheries Centre in Moncton N.B. He has been studying ecology, physiology and biology of marine crustacean species (namely brachyuran species such as snow crab, toad crab, rock crab, lady crab and green crab) and also stock assessment of snow crab in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (Areas 12, E, F and 19).

His principal research objectives are to clarify the mechanism of population fluctuation of snow crab in relation to the commercial exploitation involving a vast research field from ultramicroscopic study to population dynamics. His section, composed of highly motivated dynamic employees, has been conducting annual bottom trawl survey, field research work, in-season fisheries monitoring and laboratory investigations. As a member of COOGER, he is also leading the project of possible effects of seismic survey on marine invertebrates (namely snow crab) in collaboration with various institutions.
