Conducts basic and applied mycobacteriology research focusing on Tuberculosis at the National Reference Centre for Mycobacteriology (TB lab)

Current research and/or projects

Dr. Sharma’s laboratory has established both national and international collaborations with her research in tuberculosis using animal models, and in diagnostic and applied research using the novel genotyping methodologies and databases.

Dr. Sharma’s laboratory plays an instrumental role in projects utilizing molecular methods, bacterial genomics, human genetic markers of tuberculosis, new technology platforms for testing, new algorithms, utilization of different genotyping methods for tracking tuberculosis outbreaks and TB control.

  • Whole-genome Sequence-based Genotyping Approaches for Tuberculosis in Northern Canadian Communities
  • Lab work helps address the urgent need of a laboratory based TB genotyping surveillance in collaboration and participation from laboratories and public health units
  • Research and Development on new omics approaches to tackling drug resistant tuberculosis
  • Collaborating on whole genome sequencing-based genotyping for molecular epidemiology of Mycobacterium bovis infection in animals and humans in Canada
  • Characterized the strain dependent cytokine profile of Mycobacterium tuberculosis with focus on the Type 1 strain identification in Manitoba and defined the relationship between disease phenotype and the different mycobacterial strains

Supervises co-op students, FSWEP, graduate students, medical microbiology trainees and post-doctoral fellows.
