My work is focused on keeping nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, on the land so they can be used effectively, and out of the water or the air where they can be pollutants.  Specifically, I am working on improvements to the Indicator of Risk of Water Contamination by Phosphorus (IROWC-P), the P loss assessment tool for Ontario (PLATO) and the Reactive Nitrogen Indicator.

Current research and/or projects

Update to Indicator of Risk of Water Contamination by Phosphorus (IROWC-P)

Validation of field scale phosphorus risk assessment tools (PLATO)

Reactive Nitrogen Indicator

Supporting the Ontario Living Labs initiative.

Research and/or project statements

  • Sustainability Metrics: Indicator of Risk of Water Contamination by Phosphorus (IROWC-P).
  • Development and Transfer of an Indicator of Reactive Nitrogen Release from Canadian Agriculture.
  • Mitigating phosphorus loss from agricultural lands in the Lake Erie watershed.
  • Integrated nutrient management and multi-scale BMP assessment for priority Canadian agricultural landscapes.
  • Developing a decision support system (DSS) for estimating ammonia emissions from fertilizer and manure application to agricultural soils.
  • Research, development, and transfer of knowledge for sustainable and climate change resilient agricultural management practices to mitigate nutrient runoff from agricultural landscapes in the Lake Winnipeg Basin.
  • Reducing sediment, N and P loading from arable cropping systems to receiving waters in eastern Canada (PEI, NB, NS, QC).
