Soil Scientist, Nutrient Modeller in Agroecosystems | Agronome pédologue et modélisateur d’éléments nutritifs dans les écosystèmes agricoles

Dr. Jingyi Yang is a soil scientist and nutrient modeller in agroecosystem in the AAFC Harrow Research and Development Centre where he studies agro-environmental health with a special interest in nitrogen (N) modelling at both regional and field scales. At the regional scale, his research is in the development of a Canadian Agriculture Nitrogen Budget (CANB-Reactive N) model to estimate residual soil N and N losses from gas (N2O, NH3) emissions & nitrate (NO3) leaching. At the field scale, his research is in modeling crop growth, greenhouse gas emissions, soil carbon, N and water dynamics for various field managements on crop production and environmental risks using the DSSAT and DNDC models.

Current research and/or projects

Development of a Canadian Agricultural Nitrogen Budget (CANB- Reactive N) model to simulate two Agroenvironmental indicators: (1) Residual Soil Nitrogen (RSN) and (2) Indicator of Risk of Water Contamination by Nitrogen (IROWCN) in Canadian farmland

Assessing crop growth and soil N loss (N2O, NO3) and water dynamics using dynamic crop-soil models, DNDC and DSSAT

Research and/or project statements

The CANB-Reactive N project reports the progress of two Agro-environmental health indicators from 1981 to 2016 (or to the future census years, 2021, 2026 etc.)

The DNDC and DSSAT assessment project predicts the soil N loss in various management practices and rotations, then addresses best cropping methods to minimize N loss from field crop

Professional activities / interests

Model development using Intel Fortran (i.e., CANB, CANB-Reactive N, Ammonia-DSS)

Developing an EasyGrapher software to graph CANB and DSSAT models outputs using MS Visual Basic

Applied statistics in agriculture

Sensitivity analysis of crop yields and soil nutrients to model input parameters

Data handling and soil nutrient mapping using ArcGIS

Developing input data format programs for the CANB model from various public data sources
