Guoqi Han

Senior Research Scientist

Current research and/or projects

Dr. Han researches physical oceanography, focusing on changes in sea level and ocean circulation, as well as their impacts on marine ecosystems. Understanding the ocean and its changes is critical to marine safety, environmental protection, marine ecosystem management, offshore gas and oil exploitation, and climate change adaptation. In his research, Dr. Han develops and applies computer models, analyses, and interprets satellite observations and field measurements to study past variations and trends, current states, and future changes in the Northeast Paficic Ocean, Northwest Atlantic Ocean and elsewhere.

Professional activities / interests

Dr. Han serves on national and international scientific organizations to promote scientific exchanges. He is an Editor-in-chief of Atmosphere-Ocean, Academic Editors of PLOS One and Scientific Reports, and an Editorial Member of Ocean Modelling. He is the lead scientist for ocean sciences in the Surface Water and Ocean Topography – Canada (SWOT-C) Program and was a Vice Chair for Commission A: Space Studies of Earth’s Surface, Meteorology and Climate, Committee on Space Research. Dr. Han also trains PhD and master’s students in the field of physical oceanography as an Adjunct Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland and University of Victoria in Canada.

In addition, Dr. Han led the Science Program Committee for the CMOS (Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society)-CGU (Canadian Geophysical Union)-AMS (American Meteorological Society) 2007 Congress, and received the Prize in Applied Oceanography from the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society in 1998.
