Current research and/or projects
Gary Meyer leads the Shellfish Health Program at the Pacific Biological Station. The objectives of the Shellfish Health Program are to acquire a better understanding of the parasites and diseases that may impact the health of cultured and wild shellfish stocks on the west coast of Canada and to find methods for their prevention or control. The diagnostic portion of the program primarily conducts necropsies and histological disease screening in support of the National Aquatic Animal Health Program, movement of molluscs, and in response to mortality events. The research component further investigates the biology and biodiversity of shellfish parasites and diseases using molecular techniques and electron microscopy.
