Frédéric Genest, P. Eng.
My main role is to support initiatives to decarbonize federal activities. During my years as a building services engineering consultant, I took part in many projects in the areas of building construction and renovation, energy efficiency, earth energy system installation and sustainable buildings. I use my experience as a designer to advise federal decision makers and managers in their projects to decarbonize their buildings and activities.
Similarly, I also support my colleagues’ research by using my experience to advise them on which research projects they should work on and the objectives they should achieve, sometimes playing an active role in them.
Current research and/or projects
My current focus in applied research is high temperature heat pumps. With this type of heat pump, capable of producing heating water at a temperature greater than 80 °C, we are able to decarbonize many existing commercial buildings without resorting to costly and substantial renovation work. Ongoing research aims to show the energy and financial benefits they provide and facilitate their uptake in public and private real estate markets.

Professional activities / interests
I’ve been working within the NRC's Codes Canada group since 2008 as a member and observer for the development of the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB), on subjects relating to building mechanical systems and energy modelling, and verifying the French translations of the national codes.
I’ve also been teaching certificate-level courses on building mechanical systems at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal for over 20 years.
