Current research and/or projects

Earl Davis is a senior research scientist at the Pacific Geoscience Centre of the Geological Survey of Canada, where he began work in 1977 after completing a PhD at the University of Washington Geophysics Group in 1975, and a post-doctoral fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Department of Earth and Planetary Science.  His research has focused on the thermal state of the earth and evolution of oceanic lithosphere, on hydrothermal heat and mass transport within and loss from the oceanic crust at mid-ocean ridges, ridge flanks, and subduction zones, and on deformation and changes in the hydrologic state of sub-seafloor formations associated with oceanographic loading, earthquakes, aseismic slip, and inter-seismic strain accumulation.  With the technical support of M. Bone, R. Meldrum, R. Macdonald, post-doctoral fellows, and colleagues, he has developed, built, and deployed instrumentation for rapid measurements and long-term monitoring of temperatures, pressures, and ground motion at the seafloor and in deep-ocean boreholes, including seafloor heat probes, seafloor piezometers, bottom-hole temperature probes for the Ocean Drilling Program, CORK long-term formation pressure and temperature observatories for the Ocean Drilling Program, sea-bottom pressure recorders, and an ultra-broadband accelerometer and pressure instrument for seismology and geodynamics.  CORK instruments have been deployed by Davis and colleagues in a total of 27 boreholes at mid-ocean ridges, ridge-flanks, and subduction zones.  Some have been in continuous operation for 20 years, and several are now connected to shore via the DONET and NEPTUNE Canada deep-ocean cable networks.
