Leading scientific research on freshwater fish habitat

Current research and/or projects

My research program focuses on using innovative approaches to characterize fish habitat to inform freshwater ecosystem management. We use a combination of field, laboratory, and analytical approaches using tools and techniques such as telemetry, accelerometry, respirometry, and machine learning. In particular, we use bioenergetics approaches to understand how fish interact with their environment and respond to threats from human activities, focusing ecologically and economically important fish species in the Great Lakes region such as walleye, largemouth bass, northern pike, and Species at Risk (SAR) such as silver shiner. We are also using extensive fish tracking (acoustic telemetry) data to develop habitat suitability and species distribution models for a wide variety of important fish species.
