Contributing to Environment and Climate Change Canada’s mandate to asses the impacts of aquatic contaminants on freshwater ecosystems

  • Investigate the toxicity of priority contaminants (e.g., industrial chemicals, pharmaceuticals) to freshwater snails
  • Assess effects of anthropogenic activities (e.g., contaminated sites, agricultural pesticide use) on aquatic environments using in-situ invertebrate exposures
  • Develop metabolomic approaches to gain further insight into the mode of action and/or effects of contaminants
  • Develop bioassays to assess reproductive effects in freshwater gastropods to provide ecologically relevant data for use in environmental risk assessments

Current research and/or projects

Research in support of the Chemicals Management Plan

  • Effects of bisphenol A (BPA) and BPA alternatives on native aquatic wildlife: chronic laboratory exposures
  • Toxicity and Bioaccumulation of Short-Chain Perfluoroalkyl Carboxylic Acids (PFCAs) and Perfluoralkyl Sulfonic Acids (PFSAs) in aquatic organisms
  • Effects of SSRIs on the behaviour and reproduction in freshwater invertebrates
  • Assessing the toxicity of lead from recreational fishing (sinkers, jigs) activities in the aquatic environment

Research in support of the St-Lawrence Action Plan

  • Étude de toxicité de sédiments contaminés chez les mollusques
