Dr. Caren Binding

Image Caren Binding
Research Scientist - Aquatic Optics and Remote Sensing

Delivering research and products relevant to Environment and Climate Change Canada’s mandate to ensure the conservation and protection of aquatic ecosystems. Specialising in satellite remote sensing for inland water quality applications and lead for the EOLakeWatch program.

Current research and/or projects

Contributing to priority research programs on Lake Winnipeg, the Great Lakes and Lake of the Woods to:

  • Develop, validate and apply bio-geo-optical models and algorithms for the retrieval of water quality information from in situ and remotely sensed water colour in optically complex coastal and inland waters
  • Characterise the optical properties of the main dissolved and particulate colour producing agents
  • Advance the operational use of earth observations in monitoring aquatic processes through the development of autonomous satellite image acquisition & processing
  • Lead on EOLakeWatch - a platform for the distribution of satellite remote sensing products for inland water algal bloom monitoring
