Current research and/or projects
Contributing to Environment Canada’s mandate to conduct research on the impacts of contaminants on aquatic ecosystems
- Investigate the toxicity of priority organic contaminants (e.g., industrial chemicals, pharmaceuticals) and contaminant mixtures (e.g., naphthenic acids) to freshwater invertebrates
- Assess effects of anthropogenic activities (e.g., oil sands development, agricultural pesticide use) on aquatic environments using in situ (caged) invertebrate exposures
- Link contaminant exposure to effects using biomarkers (e.g., acetylcholinesterase)
- Design novel methods in invertebrate toxicology to link laboratory and field research and increase environmental relevance
- Develop invertebrate bioassays to assess reproductive effects in order to provide ecologically relevant data for use in environmental risk assessments
