Current research and/or projects

Derek MacFarlane is responsible for a variety of research projects at CFS-AFC. These include Pest Management, Forestry Practices, Forest Biotechnology, and Socio-Economics. Derek’s role as Science Director is to help develop and balance the science and technology program at AFC that meets both the national goals of CFS as well the needs of our regional clients.

Mr. MacFarlane joined CFS in 1985, after working with J.D. Irving Woodlands as an operational forester and YSC Forest Products Marketing Board as a silviculture manager. He worked as a Forestry Officer from 1985-1990, and a Forest Economist from 1990- 2001 where he collaborated with officials from Model Forests in Atlantic Canada, provincial governments, private woodlot organizations, and the forest industry.

He is a member of the N.B. Association of Registered Professional Foresters, the Maritime Section of the Canadian Institute of Forestry and is an Honorary Research Associate at the University of New Brunswick.

Mr. MacFarlane has published over 25 articles which include journal articles, information reports, Technical Notes and R&D reports.
