To study the impact of environmental variables such as temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH on the physiology, growth rate and distribution of marine fishes and crustaceans

Current research and/or projects

My main research program consists in estimating how abiotic environmental variables such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH, alone or together, influence the metabolic rate of marine fishes and crustaceans. I also study how these environmental variables influence survival, abundance and distribution of marine fishes and crustaceans, mostly in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence, at present. These findings can be combined with models that project future conditions of temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH, as a consequence of climate change, on distribution and abundance of fishes and crustaceans.

Another aspect of my work deals with the trophic web by looking at the diet of many species of fishes and some crustaceans, mostly in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence.

I am a member of the Unité de Recherche en Physiologie de la Conservation des Anarhichadidés (URPC_A) and am investigating the impacts of abiotic variables on the physiology of this species at risk, as well as how this species may be farmed commercially.

I am a specialist in the technique called respirometry, which consist in measuring the rate of oxygen consumption of animals, in my case of marine fishes and crustaceans. I have proposed technological and analytical improvements in respirometry in my publications and by creating a package to be used in the R language (see below).

Research and/or project statements

  • Impact of temperature and pH on hypoxia (low levels of dissolved oxygen) tolerance of northern shrimp and Greenland halibut
  • Impact of temperature and depth on the distribution of juvenile snow crab in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence using one of its predator, Atlantic cod, as a sampling gear
  • Projecting the distribution of Greenland halibut, northern shrimp and Atlantic cod in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence in 50 years
  • Impact of hypoxia on embryonic development and hatching success of spotted wolffish

Professional activities / interests

I wrote a R package called fishMO2 to calculate and illustrate things like standard metabolic rate, lethal oxygen level, specific dynamic action, convert between different units of dissolved oxygen, and more. For now this package can be downloaded from my ResearchGate page or by contacting me, but I hope to make it available on CRAN before long.
