I develop new germplasm and varieties of the alternative oilseed crops camelina (Camelina sativa) and carinata (Brassica carinata) and conduct research on these crops in the areas of genetics, genomics and phenomics.

Current research and/or projects

  • Development of camelina (Camelina sativa) and Ethiopian mustard (Brassica carinata) cultivars with improved agronomic and quality traits adapted to the Canadian Prairies
  • Genetic enhancement of camelina and Ethiopian mustard germplasm
  • Development of a pollination control system in Ethiopian mustard and Polish canola (B. rapa)
  • Phenotyping of Ethiopian mustard  and camelina mapping populations for the development of molecular markers associated with agronomic and quality traits

Research and/or project statements

  • The development and breeding of alternative crops for new food and non-food uses aims to support economic and ecological sustainability of Western Canadian agriculture through increased diversification of crops and biodiversity in the agricultural landscape
