Annie Claessens, Ph.D.

Research Scientist, Perennial Forage Biomass Crops

My research program focuses on the development of cultivars and genetic material of perennial species for forage and bioenergy purposes.

Current research and/or projects

Development of cultivars and germplasm of perennial forage plants that are more resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses and meet the needs of dairy, cattle and commercial hay producers in Canada.

Research and/or project statements

• Development of cultivars and genetic material of perennial plants for the fodder and bioenergy industry

  • increase yield, nutritional value and persistence
  • increase resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses (frost, heat, drought, salinity)
  • increase the use of perennial fodder plants for non-food uses (bioenergy, ecosystem services, etc.)

Professional activities / interests

  • Development of new breeding approaches combining traditional genetic improvement, genomics and metabolomics
  • Development of germplasm of alfalfa, timothy grass, and switchgrass
  • Cultivar development
