Current research and/or projects

Developing new methods for automated extraction of ice and ocean information from spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to improve ECCC numerical prediction systems.

  • Microwave remote sensing of sea ice and the ocean surface
  • Automated techniques for extration of Arctic sea ice and ocean characteristics from SAR
  • Data assimilation in Arctic sea ice prediction systems

Research and/or project statements

  • Lead for SAR data assimilation in ECCC Arctic sea ice prediction systems, since 2015.
  • Led the development of sea ice motion tracking system operating with RADARSAT-2 SAR images (2008-2010). The system has been operationally utilized at ECCC to produce ice motion maps over the entire Arctic.
  • Led the development of ocean surface wind speed retrieval models operating with RADARSAT-2 SAR images (2010-2011). The models have been operationally utilized at ECCC to produce wind maps over the Canadian coastal areas.
